All about me and my love for sports and business!
My name is Dylan Ephron and I'm a freshman at AIS, I recently moved from Johannesburg, South Africa where I had lived my whole life and am embarking on a new journey as I will be finishing high school at AIS. I went to a highly competitive academic school known as Crawford College Sandton.
I have previous experience in technology courses prior to computer applications, I was enrolled in a course know as STEAM which incorporates different elements of technology into one subject. I am a fan of apple devices and I have a MacBook and iPhone, I tend to spend about two hours on my computer after school in order to complete assignments. The apps I use most often are Snapchat, Instagram and WhatsApp. These applications are social media platforms which enable me to stay connected to different people across the globe and these applications make it very easy to stay in touch with all my friends and family around the world. These applications also make it much easier to meet new people in Israel and create new friendships, for those reasons I use these applications most commonly. Without technology I would miss communicating with people as I believe it is very important to stay in touch with your friends and family on a daily basis.
I would say I am a confident and competent IT user and I use it when need be such as for school projects or for courses that require it. I have worked with Java and coding in the past, some of the areas of computer science really interest me and for that I reason I may consider taking AP computer science in the future. I am creative and have taken subjects such as Visual Art and Drama, I also have experience in web programming using javascript. I have a huge interest in business applications and the business world, I have prior knowledge in Word processing (ex. Google Docs or Microsoft Word), Presentations (ex. Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint). I believe I am a effective independent learner as I am disciplined and self-managed as well as have good time management and organization skills, I have taught myself coding using javascript and mircobit.org. I learn new technologies through many different platforms such as school, online resources, courses or self practice. I am always open to writing and reflecting on what I am doing during school and I see this as an integral part of my learning. I have no problem with learning on my own and I can successfully find the resources needed and can judge whether or not my work is accurate.
One of our projects for the semester was to come up with a project proposal and then work on achieving your product in a few weeks, I am planning on learning how to use spreadsheet to analyze sport statistics. I want to gain great knowledge in using spreadsheet. I want to be able to take raw data and information, organize it into different categories and desired areas depending on the different sport. The overview of my project is as follows, I have a prominent desire and passion for sports, so I thoroughly enjoy analyzing sports statistics and information. To learn how to use spreadsheet will not only assist in gaining experience and skill, it will help me in the future as I want to go into the business world where spreadsheet is widely used and required.I am planning to learn through online courses and research, as well as speaking to people who have background knowledge in spreadsheets. I will be under the guidance of Mr. Shappell, using his understanding and knowledge in order to make the learning easier and quicker. I am hoping to gain considerable knowledge in spreadsheets and learning how to analyze sports statistics using different methods. I want to be able to produce a spreadsheet that can be used to examine different areas of sports.
The resources I will be using are: data, short online course on google sheets, instructor, google, youtube and excel. My initial plan is broken up into three steps:
1. I will consult my instructor to guide me in the right direction. I will also use different online courses in order to start basic learning and understanding of spreadsheet. I will watch simple youtube videos in order to see exactly what to do instead of just reading about it, all of which will get me started in order to achieve my final goal.
One of the two learner outcomes that I will strive to achieve at the end of the project is to be a resilient, persistent, and adaptable achiever, I chose this learner outcome because I believe in never giving up no matter what, I believe in trying every possible solution until you succeed. I also think it is extremely important to be resilient and persistent in my work, it will not only set in me good stead for computer applications but for all my other subjects throughout the course of high school. I want to grow in a way that I don’t let failures put me down but rather let them challenge me to succeed and make me work harder at the end of this project I do not only want to have gained knowledge but also mental strength. I will be using my instructor as well as the people around me to assist me in achieving this goal.
The second learner outcome that I will strive to achieve is to be an innovative problem solver, I chose this learner outcome as I believe in out of the box thinking, this is a skill that you can carry with you for the rest of your life. Understanding what is required of you and being able to find a solution to any problem is fundamental for learning. I want to grow in a way where I can come up with out of the box solutions and ideas to diverse problems in different areas of this subject. I want to be able find unusual and extraordinary solutions to very difficult problems which is the epitome of an innovative problem solver. I will be using all different resources around me that will assist me in achieving this goal such as my fellow students or instructor.
At the end of the project I want to able to take raw data and organize it into spreadsheet, as shown in the digital artifact below.

2.I will gather raw data and materials in order to start the first few steps of the process, this will facilitate in gaining better skill in gathering basic data. I will then organize the data into their different categories of the sport according to what will be analyzed.
3. I will put the data I have collected into spreadsheet and use the knowledge I have gained to organize the data into columns and rows as well as find the different percentages and values of the organized data.
