The start of something new.
My name is Dylan Ephron and I'm a freshman at AIS, I recently moved from Johannesburg, South Africa where I had lived my whole life and am embarking on a new journey as I will be finishing high school at AIS. I went to a highly competitive academic school known as Crawford College Sandton.
I have previous experience in technology courses prior to computer applications, I was enrolled in a course known as STEAM which incorporates different elements of technology into one subject. I am a fan of apple devices and I have a MacBook and iPhone, I tend to spend about two hours on my computer after school in order to complete assignments. The apps I use most often are Snapchat, Instagram and WhatsApp. These applications are social media platforms which enable me to stay connected to different people across the globe and these applications make it very easy to stay in touch with all my friends and family around the world. These applications also make it much easier to meet new people in Israel and create new friendships, for those reasons I use these applications most commonly. Without technology I would miss communicating with people as I believe it is very important to stay in touch with your friends and family on a daily basis.
I would say I am a confident and competent IT user and I use it when need be such as for school projects or for courses that require it. I have worked with Java and coding in the past, some of the areas of computer science really interest me and for that I reason I may consider taking AP computer science in the future. I am creative and have taken subjects such as Visual Art and Drama, I also have experience in web programming using javascript. I have a huge interest in business applications and the business world, I have prior knowledge in Word processing (ex. Google Docs or Microsoft Word), Presentations (ex. Google Slides or Microsoft PowerPoint). I believe I am a effective independent learner as I am disciplined and self-managed as well as have good time management and organization skills, I have taught myself coding using javascript and mircobit.org. I learn new technologies through many different platforms such as school, online resources, courses or self practice. I am always open to writing and reflecting on what I am doing during school and I see this as an integral part of my learning. I have no problem with learning on my own and I can successfully find the resources needed and can judge whether or not my work is accurate.
Last semester I tackled two projects, one was gaining sufficient knowledge in spreadsheets in which I was able to gain the invaluable skill of creating a spreadsheet which I used to analyse my cricket skills. The other project was tackling Photoshop, in which I was learning how to efficiently use photoshop in order to be able modify people’s bodies using the dispersion effect whilst playing sport. Using the dispersion effect will make part of the photo into millions of little particles. Last semesteri was able to grow in numerous aspects, I grew in areas such as working towards to becoming a resilient, persistent, and adaptable achiever, a critical and creative thinker as well as an innovative problem solver.
I am extremely excited to be starting a new project, my product is to acquire sufficient background knowledge and understanding of Computer Science. An overview as to why I am doing this project, how I am going to do it and what I am doing is as follows, Computer Science has always sparked my interest. I've always been mathematically inclined and I love to see, understand and solve innovative problems. I am pursuing Computer Science as I want to be able to give myself the opportunity to study computer science in the future. Computer Science gives one the advantage with new cutting edge technology. Last semester I pursued Spreadsheets in order to better understand my cricket game and to give myself a head start when it comes to spreadsheets in the business world. One who understands the ideas and functions of Computer Science has a significant advantage over any businessman or economist when it comes to the business world. The future holds many new technologies and having a basic understanding as to how this new technology functions is extremely beneficial. I plan to acquire basic knowledge of computer science by studying Karel J Robot and to finish the textbook. Once completed I am hoping to have gained sufficient background knowledge and understanding of Computer Science in order to possibly pursue AP Computer Science next year or in the future.
The resources I will be using are: Karel J Robot, Youtube, Big Java textbook, Fellow Classmates in AP Computer Science, Instructor and Google. The main book that I will be learning from can be seen in the digital artefact below:
My initial plan is broken up into three steps:
1.Being guided in the right direction by my instructor. My first step will entail learning the basics of computer science and programming by working through the Karel J Robot book.
2.My next step will be further academic learning with computer Science and applying the knowledge and information I have gained as well as possibly pursuing AP computer science.
3.Use the knowledge I will have acquired in the business world and to better understand the way all technology functions.
One of the two learner outcomes that I will strive to achieve at the end of the project is to be a critical and creative thinker. I chose this LO as I am a strong believer in critical and creative thinking as well as thinking outside of the box, this a fundamental skill for school, college and all future jobs. I want to grow in this LO in that I want to be able take apart problems and challenges and solve them in creative way. I will be using the resources around me to achieve this LO, including my instructor, classmates in order for them to critique my work so that I can develop and learn.
The second learner outcome that I will strive to achieve is to be an innovative problem solver. I chose this LO as I believe in out of the box thinking, this is a skill that you can carry with you for the rest of your life. Understanding what is required of you and being able to find a solution to any problem is fundamental for learning. I want to grow in a way where I can come up with out of the box solutions and ideas to diverse problems in different areas of Computer Science. I want to be able find unusual and extraordinary solutions to very difficult problems which is the epitome of an innovative problem solver. I will be using all different resources around me that will assist me in achieving this goal such as my fellow students or instructor.
